    Hello I am new to this forum and very much an amateur gardener. We have moved house and in the garden there a ell established Acer shrub. The tips of the leaves have suddenly gone a rusty colour and are shrivelling Can any one help please gel

    Hello gel.

    Sad that you are experiencing this problem so soon after moving house.  Problem for all of us wishing to be of assistance.  For you to fully describe the problem and likewaise for us to get the gist of things.  A book could be written.  Many strange things are taking place in the garden, due in part to these strange weather conditions.  In some areas, the seasons have advanced a month or more.  Without actually seeing the leaves etc of your subject.  It would be easy to quote this and that.  Could you possibly provide us with a picture.  Fell free to contact me, a jpeg in an email will help.

    Hello Mike and thank you very much for your offer of help. We live in Warwickshire and the ground is very heavy clay I have taken pictures but I cannot see how I enclose them with this message. I have read your profile and very much admire your efforts regarding your gardening activities Best wishes gel

    We have been having a similar experience.  Acer do seem to be quite fussy.  Last year it seemed to be unhappy due to the dry conditions in April (at least, I took some leaves to the local garden centre to see what they thought, and they thought that was more likely than a disease problem).  This year it looked really good still in June, but recently some of the leaves are starting to curl/frizz a bit at the edges - so maybe it doesn't like the rain either?! Tongue Tied

    Apparently they don't like exposed sites: they like a bit of shade.  I suspect ours had that to begin with, but now has grown so big that it isn't shaded any more.

    Still, it is still an attractive tree...  good luck with yours.  I'm afraid I don't know about posting pics (there is an insert/edit image bit in the bar at the top of the message panel: can you use that?) - but I'm sure if you can manage it some of the experts here will be able to make suggestions as to what might be wrong.

    Hello Gel,

    Sorry things are still looking bad.  Can you try to post a picture?  Or else maybe find a picture on the internet that looks similar we can look at?

    And maybe say a bit about how big your tree is, whether it is in an exposed or sheltered position, etc?  I'm sure that would help the experts to give some advice.

    Otherwise if I have a problem like this I have found that if you take a sample in to your local garden centre there is often somebody there who can give you some advice: that might be worth a try.
