Hello. This is my first post. Can anyone help identify these blighters? I thought one was a red hot poker but there are no flowers, only these catkin type things, and it has spread into several different places. The other one I thought was a sunflower but no flower yet so now not sure?
Thanks for any help,
Kate

Hi silver surfer - wow that was quick! Thank you, yes I'm sure it is carex judging from all the photos. Now I need to decide whether to keep it as its not very colourful when I was expecting flowers!
If anyone can help identify the other plant it would be great,

First one looks like it could be a perennial sunflower. (Helianthus multiflorus?)
Whether you think you can do a thing, or think you cannot, you are right.

Thank you Phot's-Moll. However I'm not so sure, it has no flowers and the leaves are really big, about the size of my hand, and all the pictures I can find of the perennial sunflower the leaves are much smaller.
Do you know when the sunflower would start to develop flowers?
thanks

I think photo 1 is Nicandra physalodes, the shoo fly plant.

Plant 1 has been bugging me too and I know I've seen it in my own garden!! It's definitely not Nicandra physalodes of which I have a few in the garden. The one I'm leaning towards could be Mirabilis which has failed to come up in the garden from self sown seeds for the last two years and sowing new seed hasn't proved fruitful either for the last couple of years either.

Hi Roseka, as my plant has been described as "definitely not Nicandra physaloides" I would be really grateful if you could keep us informed of it's growth. A few pictures, especially when it begins to flower, would be very helpful. I'm always ready to learn something new.
Regards
Dave

Hi Dave,
I am definitely thinking it might be a perennial sunflower now. There seem to be flowers forming, and yes I will get some more photos when the flowers are bigger. It definitely isn't your Nicandra judging from the photos.
thanks for all your comments

Hi Dave,
Yes I was waiting a few days more until more had flowered, but here's a pic from earlier today. I think the rubbish summer has delayed the flowers coming out, but its definitely sunflowers, and its a big blighter, over 6ft tall now! I think I'll have to move it to the back of the border for next year.
See it here http://s1070.photobucket.com/albums/u485/roseka73/Gardening/?action=view¤t=IMAG0243.jpg
Happy gardening!

Thanks Kate, i think it could be some type of Rudbeckia or Helianthus.
