Newbie question on compost

     Digging multi purpose compost into thin soil will help - if the soil is currently bare just spread it in a layer and fork it over before planting.

    If you decide to buy more, then I'd suggest something such as mushroom compost or rotted manure. As these aren't so broken down they'll have a longer lasting effect and tend to be a bit cheaper, especially if you buy a large quantity.

    If you can, it's worth making your own compost to use as a soil improver.
