Hello, We live in a 1960s semi in ana rea where everyone has paved over their front gardens. We've replaced ours with lawn, and lots of plants and a hedge, but this year we'd like to add a tree at the front edge. The wall is 5.5m from the front of our house and North facing. I have tried looking in all the books and used the RHS plant selector, but the sizes for the trees evetual spread are so broad i.e. 2-4m and different everywhere I look, so I am struggling to choose! A 1-2 m spread ( I am guessing means diameter?) would be just about right, but 4m way to big. And 4-5m tall would be the maximum. Any suggestions?

I love ceanothus. The purple flowers are fab. They could be considered a shrub or I've seen them grown more like a standard tree. You could prune it to the size that you like. Another shrub/tree I love is mahonia. The scent is intoxicating and it's in bloom before anything else. Again, if you let it grow it's more like a tree but with a small spread. I hope this pic isn't too small and that the tree with the purple flowers on the right gives some of idea of how ceanothus is covered with flowers. That one is in a neighbours garden. It's lovely to see from my back door, where this pic was taken.

We've got a rowan. They're quite small, have white flowers and then attractive berries and are easy to grow. I have a clematis growing up mine for summer colour.
Whether you think you can do a thing, or think you cannot, you are right.
