As a novice gardener I am regularly completely thrown by the conflicting information on the internet. The RHS website says to plant in autumn. Others (including the packet) say March-April. The corms have little green shoots, so I don't see why I shouldn't plant them successfully, since they are perennials, even if they don't flower this year. Any feedback much appreciated!

If they have green shoots now I'd get them in the ground asap. If it's too late for them this year (autumn is the usual time to plant corms and bulbs) I bet they'll bloom next year.

Thank you - my compost from Asda arrived midday and the corms are planted. Why is gardening so complicated? (but worth it, failures and all).

Anna.
Nice to have you on the forum. Thankfully you received an answer to your problem.
Fortunately, bulbs in particular will give you an indication as to when they need to be planted. Gardening being so complicated!. It can be so at times. Wise tip. Just as with so many matters in life. Listen to advice and experience. Then design your own course. Professional standings, change year to year. Gardening has become big business. Don't get sucked in. Enjoy your garden.
Mike.

Thanks Mike! Yes, my common sense says they'll be okay but gardening is full of mysteries. I have some in the ground and some in a pot for comparison. On to my next experiments and the battle with soil that is not just clayey but clay...
