I have a big tub on a south facing wall and I'm looking for a modest climber (6'-ish) to plant in it to grow up some trellis pinned to the wall.  I've tried a small clematis recommended by the garden centre which did ok-ish for a couple of years but has now died on me.   I think I'd prefer something that's not an annual, but one option I have at the moment is a cotoneaster which is looking for a home - one of those ones that spread out quite flat - do you think that could be persuaded to spread up the wall, and then maybe liven it up with some sweet peas or something?

I'd be grateful for any suggestions

Maybe the clematis failed because they like a cool root run, and a tub on a south-facing wall may get too warm. Those cotoneaster horizontalis can certainly be persuaded to lean on a wall and go up quite some distance. You could also try euonymus fortunei silver queen (or similar), which grow upwards 6 feet and more if they have a wall to lean on - they'll give you evergreen cover, but the flowers aren't very interesting. I expect you could grow sweet peas or chilean glory vine or cobaea scandens as annuals to scramble up through it and give colour in summer.

The annuals will be OK for the first year - maybe two. After that the pot will be full of shrub roots and they will struggle.

Whether you think you can do a thing, or think you cannot, you are right.

Thanks - good point - perhaps I'll have to rethink the whole thing!
