     HI all I am a newbie hoping for some assistance in growing Aubretia!!! I know you are probably thinking this is one of the easiest plants to grow but, I have had no/very little success with either seeds or established plants :cry: . I think it may be due to the fact that I live on the 2nd floor, directly on the sea front, facing a SW direction, totally exposed to the eliments and trying to grow this spendid plant in small window boxes!!! :roll: Looking forward to seeing this blooming on my balcony with your help :lol:

    Welcome to the forum debale. They do not like very strong wind & the salt won't help either. Must it be aubretias? Something like dianthus would have a better chance & flower for a longer season. Best K

     Hi thanks for your reply.  No, I suppose it doesn't have to be aubretia, I thought it would be hardy enough but, obviously I was wrong.  I just want something that I do not have to replant each year, evergreen, low forming/cascading with plenty of colour so, any further suggestions would be gratefully received. I will have a look at the dianthus too.

    Quite a few of the dianthus species would fit your bill. I've had some for several years. They just need a tidy up & feed in spring. If you have a look at some rock garden web sites you might get some more ideas. Your windy 2nd floor window box isn't that much different from an exposed rock face! - Let us know how you get on.      Thank you so much for your help.  I have been looked on a couple of websites at the different types of dianthus.  As you said my 2nd floor exposed balcony is just like a rock face which, is one of the reasons why I chose Aubretia (as it was grown on the Brecon Beacons).  But, I will take your advice and have a look at some rockery websites for inspiration.  I will let you know how I get on and what I choose.  Thanks again.
