Very new to gardening, moved to new house with a dead tree trunk stump. Thought it would be nice if I filled with good soil and planted something in there. It's in quite a shady spot of the garden and the stump itself has long rotted to leave a 50cm or so high base, completely empty except for the outer bark and some wood lice! Any suggestions? My mum said a heather or just lots of nasturtiums.

Whatever you plant will need plenty of water - if you can manage that then hostas might look good. If you'd prefer something more colourful, pansies or violas would work. You mum's suggestions might not do very well in a shady spo, but if the stump gets sun for part of the day they should do OK.
Whether you think you can do a thing, or think you cannot, you are right.

I agree with Digger - I'd go for removing it and enjoying the newly-freed up space

If you've only got the outer bark left, it might be an idea to place whatever you want to plant into a pot and put that in the hole - that way you will reduce the risk of the rest of the bark either rotting or splitting when you plant it up.
