I have a problem with my dahlias growing too tall and becoming top heavy with blooms causing the plants to bend and break despite staking. Is there any way that I can control the height that they get to by pinching out the shoots ?

    Regards pstik.

could that have something to do with growing them in a greenhouse at the wrong time?

No, these are over wintered in the soil.

cutting the lead bud-the first central main flower bud-will bush the plant out though ive never done this to my dahlias as i like them tall and they put out enough flowers when left to their own device. the flowers are bigger when left alone. i always think they look too bunch together when they have been topped.

Just a thought but could it have something to do with overwintering in the soil? On very rare mild winters here I've had 'normal sized' dahlias survive & grow on the following season to about 6' tall. The flowers were not as good though. Best K

Kaydee, a mild winter in your part of the world, not in living memory surely !! I leave all my dahlia tubers in the soil, this doesn't seem to effect the size or numbers of blooms from year to year. Thank you for your respomse though.

    Kindest regards
