I recently moved into an apartment which has large containers/troughs built around the sides of the balcony. The containers/troughs are around 3mtrs long, 1.5mtrs deep, 1mtr wide and contain mature conifers and shrubs, both evergreen and deciduous. The conifers are my problem; a couple of Pines and some which I think are Spruce but are column shaped. While I guess they were chosen because they were slow growing or dwarf varieties, I imagine they are now more than 10 years old and exceed 1.5mtrs in height, with the result that they are out of proportion with both the containers and the balcony. My choice seems to be either pruning for shape as best as I can and accepting they will probably look a bit odd because I wont get any new growth on the old wood, or to remove them completely which I am reluctant to do. Does anyone have any thoughts? Does anyone have any similar experience? Best regards from Berlin.

You could try trimming them - if they do end up looking odd you still have the option to remove them.

Suggest you try just a light trim to start with so as not to cut back into old wood.
