I know that you can purchase garden cane supports in various sizes and shapes and prices, but I wanted ones that cost nothing and just used items I had around the house. I used a small pvc pipe that was left over from my son's old play tent. Some instructions on my blog if you are interested here http://ploughyofurrow.blogspot.com/2012/02/diy-plant-supports.html if you are interested. Note they are not very aesthetically pleasing but they are funtional !

That looks good and pretty sturdy too.

Slightly different, but we made brassica/fruit protectors using canes held together with tennis balls. Like this: http://sustainablewitney.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/BrassicaCage.jpg but bigger.
