    Difficult to tell from a distance, wisteria, but it could be one of the Ganoderma species of bracket fungus. They get into old trees and there doesn't seem to be much you can do about them, unfortunately. There is a bit of info here: http://apps.rhs.org.uk/advicesearch/profile.aspx?PID=98

    A very old cherry tree in our garden is covered in similar growths and, although it's sad for such a lovely old tree, we've accepted that it's coming to the end of its life.
