Had good results once again this year having tried Lady Di and Armstrong. I am however very dissapointed with modern cultivars flavour. Can anyone reccomend a really nice tasting runner bean, cropping, strings, setting etc somewhat secondary in importance. (or am I just losing sense of taste at 60+)

"Scarlet Emperor", a golden oldie, or "Best of all".
I've had a bumper crop of Scarlet Emperor this year, (as the 32 portions in the freezers will testify) and, as I pick them at ~ 10" long, they are sweet, tender and full of flavour

Hi Tim, absolutely 100% with 'headfullofbees' Scarlet Emperor are hard to beat. I tried St.George this year, very pretty red & white flowers, prolific crop - but no taste! - Luckly I also grew Scarlet Emperor in a neighbours garden, so I still had nice tasty beans, and a 1st at the town show!!
I have to say I'm tempted to try Moonlight next year as I have heard many favourable comments about that variety.

Thank you all. I have also heard that Enorma are tasty, so may give them a try.

Tim, you might be right about age having something to do with the problem. It seems our sense of taste does begin toreduce as we get older. (Did find a few linksbut they were all a bit depressing)
Whether you think you can do a thing, or think you cannot, you are right.

Having tried a few others I now grow 'White Lady' for flavour, good size beans (not too coarse), stringlessness and reliable crops.

I have grown enorma for the last 5 years or so and rate it better than most of the others I have tried but I've never given Scarlet emperor a go.Enorma also comes true from saved seed so you dont need to buy new each year.
