Could anybody help with a bit of a pain of a problem. We have just built some raised beds and filled them with top soil. The supplier said it was "Grade A" top soil mixed with top range compost. It must be admitted that the soil looked and felt good. The problem we have is that there are lots of shoots and small leaves coming through now. We are, at the moment pulling them out by hand, but have been advised by a neighbour that we could just hoe them and they will die off. Because we are fairly new to the gardening game(2 years), we were wondering if this was so.

Hello Goldcrest Gardeners and welcome to the forum.
I will be refilling some raised beds soon,as I'm going to make them deeper. I regard these weeds as compost fodder. As your neighbour said, I'll hoe them off and then put them into my compost bin. As plants that have been damaged by the hoe grow back but more weakly I'll have more green matter to add, until the little darlings give up the ghost.
Good luck with your project.

Thanks for the help, I was thinking that we would have had to spend ages bent over the border pulling the little darlings out. Thank you also for the good luck message. The garden was actually a new build, just grass and a fence, beena a hard 2 years graft, but nearly done now.

Good top soil is hard to find and sometimes it is contaminated with persistant weeds such as Japanese knotweed and horsetail - such soil is clealry unfit for purpose and you are entitleed to replacement or refund.
Boggy
Beware the bat-eared bogweevil
