It would appear that the RHs is attempting to suppress the news that the Director of Estates & Gardens is no longer. Her (Jill Cherry) sudden resignation yesterday seems to have taken many by surprise - although judging by the governance of this once erstwhile charitable body this may not be surprising. Secretary / Director General / President??? one wonders who is actually running the show with the current depleted stock of experienced staffers. No doubt this posting will be deleted just as mine of yesterdays - the truth is dangerous non????? Anyone watched the Muppets recently?

You are right Digger - very much like the Clangers - even Mary, Mungo & Midge did it better perhaps? However, the Soup Dragon may finally have called time on some expense excesses ????

This sounds like the time for a chorus of "Ten green bottles."
Let's hope none of those remaining are bigots - non????

Towser, I am sure you have a point there but I am at a loss to see how the Society can manage itself having lost so many capable personnel Directors, Secretary, Director General, unmpteen others. Surely they must have been pretty useless or else the entire organisation would be in chaos? Or is the Council now back in charge...........Qui?

what does a director actually do anyway? From where I'm sitting, it seems that the lesser mortals do the work that keeps the whole thing running. Watching Chelsea on the box last year, it strikes me that the RHS has become somewhat elitist lately, and the membership has got overly expensive. Are we funding horticulture, or the toffs in green jackets and lapel badges?
I have just renewed my membership after a lapse of a few years and thought it was rather a lot of money. Not everyone is on city rates of pay, or have the priviledge of private pensions, so maybe the RHS could bring in lower memberships for pensioners. A revamp of memberships this year will help them gain more money by tax reclaimation, but what about reducing the cost for the members. I'm sure that would be more lucrative in the long run, as it would encourage more people to join, or renew their membership.. No sign of special rates for pensioners! Perhaps I should apply to be director!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Perhaps you should! I gather 'they' are now advertising for a new position 'Director of Horticulture' - a post they abolished just a few years back. I wonder how much all this 'change' has cost and what it has achieved?

Judging by the cost it is now to get into Wisley if you are not a member, I reckon there must be a lot of "them" on fat salaries. A lot of the work done in the RHS gardens is done by volunteers and students so where is all the money going.Change costs money and if there are changes for the better, people will notice. Have you seen any improvement lately? It looks the same to me.

I know nothing of the RHS politics or finances.
However, I suspect that income from invested money such as legacies etc was hit very hard by the bank fiasco, and huge sudden drop in interest rates to almost zero.
Probably in previous years they were able to pay the wages for the wonderful gardeners, from the interest earned from their investments.
That invested income has all but vanished.
I don't suppose they enjoyed telling people that they were redundant. I guess that they had no choice.

Hmm. Standard procedure denotes that if you are going to sack a team / make redundant a certain level of financial savings are made over time - Rather negated if you then go and hire another less-experienced team at similar rates. Mind you - redundancy packages are taxed differently....who is earning over £140,000 at the RHS?????
