my existing patio was laid extremely well but i would like to update it with something more fresh and modern. Same withthe front path and porch. Can i pave directly on top or should i really dig it all up and start again from scratch. I've seen patio kits and materials that make it all sound fairly easy to do but just wondering on the best way to do it for the best and longer lasting results.

The better job would be to lift the existing, remake the
foundation layer and then lay your new finish. However, as long as your existing patio/path has no settlement, or loose areas then it would provide a good base for a new "topcoat".
ISSUES: Can you really lay another patio/path on top of the existing and still have the finished level at least one full brick lower than the damp proof course on your house? How are you going to manage the difference in levels where the new path meets the road or the pavement outside your home? Hope this helps.
There is no such thing as useless - you can always be a bad example.

If the patio is level and sound you could potentially run some wooden decking over the top, you would need a good few inches to play with though. But it would get you over the potential problem of breaching your damp proof course as mentioned in the post by Arrem.
