I have two pots of strawberries which are thriving, but as soon as the fruits ripen they are attacked by wood lice.  The wood lice don't seem to be around until the fruits start to ripen.  There is a chance that other animals or insects are starting things off and the wood lice are joining in, but I only ever see the wood lice.  What measures can I take, which ideally don't involve killing the wood lice?

    Many thanks

    Mike

Wood lice are crustaceans and as such, require damp conditions. Keep your strawberries and their immediate surrounds dry, or as dry as possible, and the wood lice should crawl off somewhere else.

While you do get the occassional rogue woodlouse ( recognisable by their  distintive swagger) they are generally the more or less innocent followers of slug grazing.  Polish off the slugs with pellets etc and woodlice will return to their harmless and indeed useful activity of clearing up dead and rotting vegetation
