I am currently studying the RHS Diploma having bought the material from a correspondence school and as with the level 2 and Advanced ,read around the subject so that you really understand it.

Yes ,keep in touch. You sound as though you are on the right track studying these courses, the Plantmanship Course sounds very interesting.I started with a very basic C&G in forestry 25yrs ago then went self-employed gardening.I left it 'til i was 47 {3yrs ago] to study any formal horticulture exams and i have learnt so much ,so don't think that you have left it late.Regards, Andrea.

some of those I found useful are
the University of Conneticut Plantdatabase (woody perennials) http://www.hort.uconn.edu/Plants/index.html
Plants for a Future (no pics, loads of infos) http://www.pfaf.org/index.php
helpmefind roses (pics, infos advanced search) http://www.helpmefind.com/rose/roses.php
clematis on the web http://www.clematis.hull.ac.uk/new-clemalphasearch.cfm
hemerocallis species list http://www.hemerocallis-species.com/HS/HS_homee.htm
Ohio State University Plant Facts http://hcs.osu.edu/plantfacts/ pics, and, invaluable for me as non-native english speaking person, the pronounciation of the plant names.

The best website is this one. Look under the gardening tab at the top of the page and search under plant finder and plant selector - more info than you will ever need!
