Hi Juliet an welcome to the RHS site.Cress is a good bet  if you've not grown anything before, ....you don't  need compost or potting soil, just some sort of container and cress seeds... it germinates quickly and its something that you can put in a sandwich.

What I do is get a saucer, or small waterproof container (plastic box),or similar fold up a piece of kitchen towel, place it in the saucer, dampen it under the tap and sprinkle some cress seeds on it.They start to grow in a few days and should be ready to eat in about a week or so.Big Smile

Juliet, do you have any outside space at all? If so, that increases the range of things you can grow.

Inside, you could grow lettuce, oriental greens, rocket, chicory - in fact a huge range of salad leaves. Packs of mixed seed are great value s you only need a tiny pinch of them each time. What I do is use small seed trays (you can buy quite attractive ones with drip trays that will look good on a kitchen windowsill) Fill with moist compost, sprinkle on a very few seeds, trying to get them evenly spaced, then cover with a very thin layer of compost (barely cover the seeds) They'll germinate in a week or so and you can pick a few leaves as soon as they're big enough for you to get hold of them. Once you're picking from the first tray, so another batch for a constant supply. Just take seperate leaves from the outside of each plant.

Basil and coriander would grow well in pots on a windowsill.

Whether you think you can do a thing, or think you cannot, you are right.

what about all those sprouting seeds, like mung beans?

All you need is an empty jar,a rubber band and a bit of j cloth ,so easy,so tasty,so quick !

just put some seeds in the jar,and swill them out with water through the j cloth twice a day.
