Hi
I have planted some winter broccoli, i am growing it in bags along a path way the bags are raised of the ground ( for drainage) and the plants were doing very well. Then i noticed a couple of them wilting, on further investigation i found little white grubs around the necks of the plants just below the surface of the soil. They look very similar to vine weevil grubs but much smaller. Can anyone help please what on earth are they ? and how do i get rid of them ?
I have already removed the infected plants along with a good scoop of the surrounding soil.

Could be cabbage root fly Delia radicum – a bit like carrot root fly but found only on brassicas. Has several generations a year. No treatment available once you have it – the only control is to use collars at the base of the stem (this tends to only be partially effective) or grow the crop under fleece.

Hi Pesty
Thanks for your quick response, although it is disapointing news. I will continue with daily inspections and hope my complete crop is not wiped out.
Once again many thanks

Hi Glenec I cut out some felt rings, and cut a slit towards the centre, from some spare roofing felt that I covered the rabbit hutch with. I placed them around my cabbages but the cabbage white caterpillers finished them off and in the end didn't have any cabbages at all.Next year I'll be putting on the netting as soon as I plant the cabbages!
