Me again. See my post on daffodils, well I just tipped the Stargazer lilies out of the pots so I can plant up the daffodils. Trouble is, I don't know how to go on with the lily bulbs. They are over, and when I tipped them out they came out in one huge root ball that is holding the dirt all around them. Should I get in there and break them apart, or leave them for the rain to wash clean? Presumably I dry them off, but I really need to be thinking about putting them in the ground where I want them permanently no later than around February which is about the time my reorganising of that particular border will happen.
Finally, a couple of grand days of weather and I really should be out there!

I leave my lily bulbs in their pots after they've died down Celtic Heart. I wait until the main stem has gone brown and pulls away easily, then split the bulbs if they've multiplied and repot them.

If they have fleshy roots attached, then I suggest you plant the lilies into the garden now. You could put the rootball into a tub of water to help you gently tease the roots apart. Make sure you dig nice big holes and don't damage the roots cramming them in - or you could keep them in one clump and plant the whole lot together.
Whether you think you can do a thing, or think you cannot, you are right.

Thanks, both for your help. Well, they are pretty pot bound. They'd been in their pots for a couple years, though this is the first year they bloomed. I've decided where I want them, but I'm not ready to put them there yet. The earth around the roots when I tipped them out is solidly held together with the roots so I guess that is how I will leave them now and plant them in wholesale in the three clumps rather than try to split them. There seem to be a fair few new leaves springing up, so I guess they have multiplied too.

Don't let the bulbs dry out, bad, very bad indeed.
