Just come across this: http://www.wuvie.net/tireplanter.htm - making planters out of old tyres - not for the faint-hearted maybe, but it could be something to do with the kids one weekend. There are links to some other projects at the end of the page and some of them are really creative.

That's good Miranda, it looks like the hardest part would be turning the tyre inside out. We have a spare tyre here but it's on the driveway serving it's useful purpose of stopping us (ok me) hitting the house wall

I once had a flat in London with only a balcony - I didn't turn the tyres inside out, but hung the whole tyre up (as when on the car) with very strong cord and put soil in the bottom rim, filled with compost and planted with some trailling plants - very effective they looked too!

Sorry Sue1002, I don't have any pics, it was years ago, I'd seen it on some tv programme, I forgot to mention, they were tyres off a mini and I painted them green and used green cord.
