Thanks ErWe. Congrats Helen, I worked really hard too but I still thought I'd failed, was amazed to have passed even, let alone with a commendation. It really didn't help that some of the questions weren't covered on the syllabus!

I'm still waiting for examiners report to appear on the website, as I'll be interested to see what comments they have for some of the questions!

    Well done Helen!

Hi thanks - which questions did you feel weren't covered by the syllabus?

I'd like to add my congrats to everyone too. Party!!!

After being away for a week I got home to find my results still had not arrived and had to wait until today to ring the college where I sat the exam.

Apparently 'hard copies' of the marks are not yet available to be sent out but they were able to tell me that I too have passed with commendation.

Phew Big SmileDrinksDrinks I am so relieved

I think the standard required for passing Hort 1 scared me into studying even harder this time

    Hi Vic,

I guess you haven't set up an online account where the results have been available for some time now?

Why don't you give your tutor/examination centre a buzz tomorrow. They should have your results. My examination centre called me to tell me my result the day it came out - and I was only an external candidate there! I was well impressed. Failing that you could try RHS Qualifications and ask them for your result or to have an online account set up. Good luck and let me know how you got on! Hope you did well. I am pleased with my result and glad it is over now! Congratulations to everybody else who passed!

    Hi Helen,

For starters, we never covered mist propagation units on my course. I thought it may just have been the course I followed but I have spoken to somebody who studied elsewhere and he'd never covered them either.

I only took Hort I but it seemed the questions were pulled from two or three lessons from the first half of the syllabus so it wasn't representative of the syllabus as a whole. I understand the RHS has to mix up the questions a bit year on year but this shouldn't be at the expense of leaving out half the subjects covered, or at the expense of writing questions in plain, unequivocal English.

I thought some of the questions were badly worded, it's difficult to remember them verbatim and I'll be interested to have another look at the paper when it's published, but I seem to recall a question on vegetable gardens asking you to list 5 features of a successful veg garden. I assumed features could be things like raised beds, a water butt, etc. but this wasn't at all clear. The question asked you to draw a diagram of said veg garden which left you no time to explain what each feature was and why it should/could be incorporated. It seemed a little bit like a question was added to give the candidates the opportunity to draw something, just so people that had bought coloured pencils (like me!) weren't disappointed.

I'll be interested to look through the paper again.

In the syllabus (propagation) mist units are specified.  I always find it pays to look through the syllabus to check Ihave covered all topics required.  There is so much to cover that not all aspects can be realistically taught in college hours.

The exam papers from June 09 are on the website now.

Well, at least you passed hey, DaisyDaisy! Smile

The questions do need careful reading but I think if you aren't sure of what a question means, then it's an idea to say 'I interpret the question this way and am answering it as such'.

One thing we had drummed into us is that the RHS are looking for evidence of knowledge, not prose. That makes it a lot quicker to get your answers down. When I sat my exam, time was getting short so, for one question, I folded the paper lengthways and simply made two lists of advantages and disadvantages of whatever it was the question was about and that was acceptable.

Just to let all of you know i also passed Hort1 and passed Hort 2 with commendation.  I am really proud of myself as i really thought i'd failed.

I also thought i did an awful lot of revision on things that were not covered in the exam and i had to guess at the mist propagation question, but i am very grateful i passed.

Thank you to all the people that helped me with things i got stuck on when i was revising.

Is anyone taking level 3 on here now?
