Hi!
We are holding our 'wedding reception' in our back garden on 3rd October and I am looking for ideas to plant out our borders with shrubs/flowers that will make our garden borders not look to bare for the Autumn!
There are basically borders around each side of the garden, the North and top West side of the borders are planted currently with flowering perenials and Lavender (lots of space still inbetween though). The South and bottom West side stay in the shadow most of the day (The South from the house, the West from trees) so I am guessing that perhaps ferns would be appropriate (are ferns still alive in October?!)
Do you have any suggestions please? More than happy to invest in some shrubs if suitable. We have not budgeted for any plants so please can you make your suggestions "reasonable"! :-)
Thanks in advance x

I've just had a look at some photos of what was flowering well in my garden in early October last year and there were Dahlias, Asters, Fuchsias, Verbena bonariensis, Sedum spectibile and a shrub Lavatera.

Thank you. Do all of those need sun location or sun/shade?

Colchicum also called autumn crocus is very colourful and the bulbs are available to plant now - they flower very quickly. Well drained in sun or light shade.

From the ones I listed infinitymum, they all do well in full sun which is the positions I have them in. The Fuchsias and some Asters will also cope with partial shade.

Japanese anenomes come in pink and white and like sun and shade; they flower for ages. Some ferns stay evergreen - look for varieties of Polystichum.
Have a happy day!
