Escallonia, probably "Apple Blossom".  It responds fairly well to pruning, so you might be able to tidy it up if others don't like it.  Cut out up to a third of the older wood back fairly hard, then do it again in a year's time, etc.  Alternatively, what about growing something else through it to give a bit more colour?  You could grow a Clematis vitticella, which is fairly vigorous (but not rampant like C montana.  There are a number of varieties in shades of white, pink and purple.  "Polish Spirit is a particularly good purple".  Plant the clematis outside the fall of this shrub and train it towards it, so that the roots are not competing.

    Enjoy!

Thank you, I had already pruned one one them back by about a third to see if it could take it before I tackled the others! Poor plants looks like they have never been pruned before so hopefully it will thrive now it has a new owner.
