Hiya all, this may or may not be of any interest.  Last year we had awful trouble with ants in the greenhouse running riot all over the place. My aunt gave us a newspaper cutting which said that ants don't like talcum powder. We bought the cheapest we could get in the pound shop and used it quite liberally in there. The ants disappeared and we never saw them again! We thought it might just have been a fluke.....but no. They cropped up again last weekend, tried the talc again and as you might guess, they've gone. Even though the talc has hardened over (where it has been trodden on) it is still keeping them at bay. We're going to try squirting into holes on our patio next (as they keep making miniature 'dunes').

I just hope we don't drive them into the house!!!

Hi Sheila - sounds good to me I must try it. I was in Aldi today and saw 4( i think) ant stations for £5. We get quite a lot of ants around here. Perhaps the ants think it is ant powder lol Big Smile

Hi Richard, we've tried using ant powder but it never seemed to make any difference, they still ran riot!

Its a nuisance when they get inside the house Sheila. They find their way through the smallest of gaps through doors, entrances etc and always seem to 'march' in a straight line. The first time I noticed them several years ago, I thought it was a mark on the floor, and it wasn't until I put on my glasses  that I saw they were ants. They seem more active on a hot day.I know they don't look too good but I don't think they do any harm  do they? Has anyone else  any thoughts, ideas?

Yes, Richard. There have been two occasions that I've found ants in my bed. The first time the bed just seemed to be on their route to wherever they were going and they marched across it and off somewhere else, but the other time they were tying to make a nest in the headboard. Don't mind them wandering about, but not setting up home in my bed!

Urgh! Ants in your bed doesn't sound like fun!

The talc idea sounds worth a try, especially if the ants arenear pets or children so you don't want to risk poisonous chemicals.

Whether you think you can do a thing, or think you cannot, you are right.

It wasn't cold, actually; both places were in hot countries, so maybe they were looking for a cooler spot to set up home.

Yes ants in bed doesn't sound good at all, once when I was in the Middle East i found a big lizard thing in the bedroom, it got in through the air conditioner,it wasn't pleased to be there and I had some trouble persuading him/her to go outside again. Anyway richardpeej ants are devils ,in the garden they will protect greenfly aphids because the ant drink the excrement from them, they protect the aphids and will kill any creature that try's to kill the aphids, like ladybug babies and lacewing babies, we had a couple of ants nests on the lottie this year,OH was doing some digging for me and came across an ants nest, the job stopped and I was forced to eradicate the ants if I wanted OH to do the digging again.

Ants make holes under my lawn and cause bits to die off.  They dig out burrows behind my drystone retaining walls, causing the walls to slide and the plants to die. Then they bite/sting me.  The horrible flying ones get in your hair (we have had several episodes of this already this year, over a period of weeks).

So yes, they DO do harm!  Today I was using the weedgun and enjoyed running it along the cracks in the path.  I shall try the talc though.
