  Reply | Contact As the out-going Editor of the website - and a long-standing member of the RHS (which I kept up during the eight years I worked for the RHS) I thought I'd add my two-penneth-worth. The running costs of My Garden are tiny, as very little of the on-going web costs are tied up in the forums. Those members of RHS staff whose jobs are under threat need to be aware of this as it will have no effect on their positions. The blogs are a different kettle of fish as the RHS does pay for some of the external bloggers because it is seen that their contributions are a vital part of maintaining the interest in and content of the site. But they're not paid a fortune by any means! The forums are a vital part of the website and, as the RHS is a charity whose remit is to improve gardening and horticulture and bring it to a wider audience, it is felt that the forums must have as wide an audience as possible - and therefore should be free to all. I totally agree. As an RHS member and an ex member of staff, I have no qualms about the forums being free to use and accessible to all. I hope it stays that way, because it's the only way to build up an online community of gardeners and those keen on gardening - which is, after all, what we all are.   Reply | Contact Digger A yuppie I am certainly not - and anyone who knows me will tell you the same. I'm a down-to-earth kind of guy - more hippy than yuppy! As someone who checks out other forums as part of my job, I can say that the majority of everyone here - especially all the regulars, are offering a great service to everyone who turns up and posts a question. A true online community - we just need some marriages and births (deaths should be included, but I'm obviously not wanting that!) for it to be a proper community. That, more than anything else, says 'hippy'. As I've been an unrepentnt hippy myself since the age of 10, I approve. If anyone calls me a hippy, I say 'Yes, and?' Anyway, it's good to see your views on the forum remaining free.

Then of course Miranda did get a marriage proposal not so long ago when she answered somebody's question sue1002

  Reply | Contact Aha, I guess revealing my long love of Gong and everything/one related to them does kinda give myself away as a hippy! I guess the marriage counts but not sure about the puppy births! Maybe, as we're a virtual community, we should be looking for virtual births and marriages. We did once think of setting up an online dating agency on My Garden - but couldn't decide if it was too tacky or not. There are never any problems in gardening - just opportunities! That's for sure!  Never associated you with the teapot gnomes - or was it teapot pixies? My mate went to the gig in London but I couldn't make it. Reassuring to know that they're still drawing a crowd.  An RHS dating agency...could be interesting. Why not, everyone else does it.

  Reply | Contact Miranda Wow, unearthed a couple of Gong contacts on the RHS forum! OMG!! It was the Pothead Pixies in the Flying Teapots - but you're kinda there. And someone with knowledge of Gong's back catalogue. Don't worry, I won't be asking for freebies as I've got most of them in one format or another. I'm sure this is all pretty odd to anyone (most people) who haven't got a clue wot we're on about.  There are never any problems in gardening - just opportunities!
