Thank you so much for all your advice (and I enjoyed your discussion!!!).
We have secured a donation of 20 tonnes of top soil from British Sugar - they recover soil from sugar beet and sell it on. I have also some phone numbers of local farmers who may be able to find us some manure. We are following up a contact for composted kitchen waste from the Army Catering School, and I should be able to get hold of some sand!
So I think we'll follow your advice and work in some sand, use the leaf mould and composted grass cuttings we have plus other compost/soil donations and see how we get along!

hehe, don't feel bad Squirrel, I've thought the same as you, it's just how he talks is all. If you read some of his other posts you will realise it's nothing personal and mentally edit :P
Gardening Tip When weeding, the best way to make sure you are removing a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull on it. If it comes out of the ground easily, it was a valuable plant.

Hi there,
Do you need any more top soil? Or does anyone else know of any companies/groups who might buy topsoil? In fact, we're prepared to give away for free! Thanks in advance!

Hi Guys, we run a charity in York and we asked a company called Dandys Topsoil to 'give us' some topsoil at a reduced price, they told us not to worry they'd supply it for free instead! Try here: Dandys Top Soil they claim to be britain's leading topsoil suppliers.
Can't promise they will but Armed Forces Families should be treated well especially when so many of them are such heroes! Joe

I just wanted to say good luck to the chaps at Saffron Walden. I was brought up near there, and can only sympathise about the clay content in the soil. On the positive side, the soil is very fertile and retains it's nutrients well. I spent years trying to improve the quality of my garden by introducing well rotted manure, and composted material but it was worth it in the end.
There is no such thing as useless - you can always be a bad example.

I've taken a look at the website that is being relentlessly plugged by josh Peters aka Dandy'stopsoil.co.uk, anyway i think they are too expensive they want £67 for one four foot re claimed railway sleeper??? I can ten for that price full sized sleepers, and as has been said before a lot of topsoil can be of poor quality full of stones weed seeds etc... better to use the stuff from your own pathways.

I tried this code and it didn't work. Does anyone have a valid code for Dandy's topsoil please?

Hi everyone, i work at Dandy's Topsoil. The only definate discount
codes that we have are for repeat custom and offer you £5 off your next
order. We are happy to quote you if you call our office though, we try
to get you the lowest possible price and we do deliver nationwide but
obviously someone down the road from you offering a different soil may
beat us on price. Thank you Josh Peters for plugging our website but
that dicount code isnt one that we have released and im sorry if anyone
has tried unsuccessfully to use it. If you join up at The Best Of Chester i know that we have some deals on with them but i dont know how you do it. PS Digger, thanks for noting the sleepers - the £67 is including the hauliage just for 1 sleeper but you can order 10 sleepers for £202 inc VAT and delivery, making it much more cost effective, maybe not as cheap as you can get but obviously it is the haulier that makes up the difference there.
