Hello all! I've got a Black Hamburgh growing on a south facing wall, in a 20inch barrel. It's in it's 3rd year so I was looking forward to letting it fruit this year after spending the last two years training the 5 main spurs along a trelis.

For some reason, it came into bud in March/April, began to open leaves and then it got suspended in time! I have a twiggy grape with about a dozen 1inch leaves on it!!!

Have I over/under watered does it need feeding, potting on? I planned to take it off the wall this weekend and lift it to see what's going on under the surface - is that wise?

    Huh?

    Hi Rebecca,

Your 20inch diameter barrel is, I assume, about a metre high so should be sizeable enough for the plant.  Since you've gotten the vine to its 3rd year & trained it, you are definitely doing something right.  Smile

So, here are a few questions/suggestions which may not be applicable to you (as you may already be doing them):

Did you top dress the compost/soil in the spring?

If you want it to grow happily & fruit, you should be feeding (a high potash feed) it once a week.

& it has to be kept sufficiently & steadily watered, if it doesn't stay appropriately watered the vine will get very sad indeed.

I'm not sure how large (width wise) you've gotten the spurs along your trellis, but if your barrel isn't that tall (less than a metre), you may want to check & see if it has become pot bound.  For a youngish vine, I wouldn't suspect it would be pot bound though.

I've never had the problem you've mentioned, but for all of my container plants I top dress & feed/water regularly. I enjoy the consistent care required Big Smile

Hope that helps.  If not, maybe another 'MyGardener' may be able to help you out.

    All the best

No growth sounds like kaput roots - check to see if thay are dead and rotted - if so start again with fresh potting media and plant. Over-watering usual cause of death, but people are fantastically ingenious at killing their plants but to be fair it is often bad luck as well. Boggy
