I run a gardening club at my local primary school and we want to put up hanging baskets. Does anyone know of any gizmos that would make it possible for the children to do the bulk of the watering of these as I'm a volunteer and spend too much time there the moment as it is without having to come in to do daily watering A hose attachment isn't an option and whatever it was would have to be relatively inexpensive. I'm already going to mix in water retaining granules to make it slightly easier.

If you fix up a method of lowering the baskets, then they could be
watered easily. Pulley systems can be bought, but would be expensive. I
suppose the easiest thing would be too hang the baskets in easily
reached positions - either low to the ground or where they can be
safely reached by standing on steps, benches etc
Whether you think you can do a thing, or think you cannot, you are right.

I made a cheap device once for doing this although it needed a hosepipe. I had a spare length of half inch diameter 5 foot long copper pipe, on the one end I fitted a 1/2 inch compression elbow and a short length (6 inch) of 1/2 inch diameter copper tube. On the other end of the ffoot tube I fitted an old 1/2 inch compression valve which was connected to the hose pipe. This worked a treat for my hanging baskets and also for watering between plants as I did not need to bend down either!. i used compression fittings as they do not require soldering. You could use the newer push fit fittings now but would still need a length of copper (or maybe steel) tube. Hope this helps. By the way I also made a microphone stand using 'T' fittings in a similar way when I was in a group!
Cheers

There are various aids available, however there are a few points that you mention that concern me. It's admireable that you give of your time to these youngsters. You mention that you do this on a voluntary basis. I suspect that the school stand well back when the thought of paying-up enters the equation, hence the cheapy idea. Have you made any suggestions to parents for help or backing. In particular, I would be a little concerned about children and hanging baskets. In the event of an accident, who would take responsibility?
fPM me if you wish.

Old small plastic water bottles, fill with water, stick them in upside down in each basket. They dont look great but can be stuck in the back and remove the need for watering everyday. Low tech and free! Gotta be worth a try!
