I know some of us are taking part in the RHS pea trial this year and thought I would start a thread off so we can compare how we are doing.

The varieties being trialled are Sugar snap 'Sugar Ann' and  Mangetout 'Oregon Sugar Pod'

I sowed my seeds on 7th April in raised beds and the first little seedling poked it's head out of the soil 6 days later, only to disappear overnight (no doubt it was one of the many pigeons around).  I immediately put canes in at the edges of the bed and ran netting between the canes and the birds are now keeping away from it.

From what has germinated since, the germination rate is very high and as at yesterday (haven't checked the garden today yet), the ones that are up are about 1cm tall.

Good idea Sue - it'll be interesting to see how we all get on.

I haven't got my seeds yet - I did apply quite late. I'll sow a row of each as soon as I get them.

Look forward to seeing how you get on with them, Sue.

I generally start peas, beans and corn in pots, kept in a safe place, because they always seem to get dug up and eaten by mice if they go straight in the ground. Some people don't seem to get this bother, but we do.

I've sown mine in the raised beds today, but have got them (I hope) safely covered - same as you Miranda, the mice usually get all the tasty seeds of the pea and bean varieties!

We've been getting at least one mouse per day in the traps in the greenhouse as well - horrid I know, but I get OH to remove the bodies before I start stressing about them - I know its daft, but I guess I would be more upset if they ate all my seeds!!!!

    Hi All,

this is my first post, and my first year growing veg!

I have put peas in (about 2 weeks ago), and despite having three (at least) frosts I have about 10 coming up nicely..so I put some more in today! Fingers crossed.

Good luck with your veggies photoboy.

Hope you get your seeds soon Phot's, I applied for the seeds the same day that the trial was mentioned in the blogs section and it took a good couple of weeks for the seeds to come through, I think I got them a day or two before I sowed them.

We don't have a mice problem this year thankfully, we've just gone the first winter mice-free in about 3 or 4 years.

I've had a proper look today at the peas coming up - from the gaps that are left, it is evident that the germination rate of the Mangetout is higher than those of the Sugar snaps - it's still a bit early as yet so some more might come through in time.

Are we 'allowed' to start them off inside in pots and plant out, or is that 'cheating'/ not what the trial wants us to do?

I think that would be cheating Garden Girl, the instructions state "Sow direct where they are to grow in April"

I still haven't received my seeds.  Is anyone else in the same boat as me?  I'm worried I'll not get to plant them in April, if I don't receive them soon.

I haven't got mine yet, either Ruth.I had an e-mail a couple of days ago to say they'd be sent soon.

On my form it asks if I'm sowing in the ground, in raised beds or 'other' so I was going to start them off in cell trays first until I saw the comments at the bottom. Perhaps I'll try both methods and report the results of the cell grown ones in 'other comments'.

    Dear Pea Triallers

We had a good take up for the first 100 to take part, so I sent their details to T&M. The second 100 were slower on the uptake and their details were sent to T&M much later. T&M have informed me that they were dispatching the seeds this week. Although I would have expected them to have arrived by now, I'm sure they will be with you shortly.

Obviously, if they're not with you by Saturday/Monday then let me know and I'll chase T&M.

Although my original instructions were to sow in April, it doesn't matter too much is they're sown in early May - and will give us a good spread of dates that we can feed into the trial results.

Hope that helps explain the situation.

     Happy trialling!
