Thought it might be Splish Splash at first but not sure when I look at the leaf - how tall does it grow?

It looks like the leaf of a cranesbill geraneum phaeum?

    Hi Pat,

this looks like a stalwart of old english gardens, called Geranium x magnificum.  I'm guessing the leaf is slightly hairy, the blue, slightly lavendar flowers last about 2-3 weeks, and the whole clump just gets bigger every year.  It could also be the Geranium 'Johnson's Blue'.  Looks very similar, but the flowers last a bit longer through the middle of (our) english summer.  Both are considered very 'useful' landscape plants ,ie they will hold their own in a big garden that might be looked after by contractors/gardener. :)   I would think that it would prefer some shade in california, and the fact that is flowering now is 'cos it is so much warmer than UK, where it flowers in early June.  Does it die down into a sort of drought dormancy through the hot summer?

    Cheers,

    Posie
