I cut ours back at the beginning of the month to about 18 inches high and the new growth is shooting through.

I'm about to cut mine back as I also live in Scotland - mine are about 3 years old - I look for good buds developing now and cut the branches back to them - but I also cut back any that are looking like they might cross, some I cut lower than other to give a more natural look to the shrub.  I also have tried rooting the cuttings and this can be quite successful - if you want more?

Thanks Clematis -  I cut my own ones back and kept some of the cuttings and stuck them in a pot of compost - so far they seem to be doing okay Smile

At home I have one which is purple, am not sure what its name is, someone gave me it.

Also bought one from a market stall which I was told was white - turns out to be yellow (globosa)

I have taken cuttings from both - hope they survive, so far so good !

The one I am about to cut right back is also a purple .

I pruned mine right back to about 2 feet high at beginning of March. I have just the one. "Pink Delight". I have been worried at the reduction in Butterflys in recent years though last year saw an improvement. I had some Hummingbird Hawkmoths visit the plant last year which was nice. I don't know whether I need to take cuttings as it self seeds frequently.

If you have more cuttings/seedlings grow than you need you could offer some to your neighbours. If there's a bigger area of them together you're more likely to draw in the butterflies.

Whether you think you can do a thing, or think you cannot, you are right.
