Forgive me if this has been raised in another post, although I can't see anything, but there are two big current issues about gardening going on at the moment - the fact that Gardeners' World will not start until April, and the fact that many sponsors are pulling out of Chelsea this year, so there are only 13 show gardens, instead of around 20 or more. I just wondered why there was no discussion on this, but maybe here is a good place to start.

On GW - starting in April strikes me as sensible as starting to show TV coverage of the football season in September (but because the BBC seems to value sport so much more, this would of course never happen).

On Chelsea - this is obviously a sign of the recession. But it's the RHS' biggest week of the year, so why no blog or forum posts on the RHS website? Why is there no comment from the RHS on here? Am I alone in my bewilderment?

I can't really comment on the Chelsea situation DigJane though if I'm honest I've always been staggered by the amounts of money spent on the show gardens.  There is something a little uncomfortable about seeing people really struggle to get by when sums like that are being spent on something that's largely decorative.

As for GW - I'm really surprised!  I was just thinking last night "it won't be long now".  Figures I read recently suggest that more and more people are gardening, especially growing food, than ever before and to leave the start of GW until April does seem odd.  I wonder whether it's a BBC decision or have the gardeners been consulted?

I've just looked it up and the BBC website says that GW is due back on Friday 13th March.  Where did you see it wouldn't be back until April?

I think this paragraph I've copied from the site might explain the point DigJane was making.

"The series returns on Friday 13 March, when Carol Klein meets a selection of plantholics in the first of three 60-minute specials. On 20 March, Joe Swift explores gardening in small spaces; and on 27 March, Toby Buckland investigates the peat debate."

Arguably the 3 Specials are in March so the first show proper will be on April 3rd.

I saw the Alan Titchmarsh show yesterday and it was mentioned on there that the main GW programmes start again in April but before the series starts there will be three x one hour specials.  However, it wasn't mentioned whether these specials were new programmes or if they would be repeats.

I have now read it properly so I do agree that it is a shame to start it so late - I could do with it being on now!

I think GW should be on over winter - that's exactly when we want cheering up with pictures of lovely gardens and when we've got time to watch. In spring and summer my evenings are spent in the garden, not in front of the TV.

Whether you think you can do a thing, or think you cannot, you are right.

Ditto Phot's - plus what they will be saying about growing will mean that most people will have 'missed the boat' for the coming season if the programme is not being aired until April. I think the Beeb need a kick up the a**, very bad planning on their part. Such a shame really, as I think there will be a lot more people this year getting into cultivation of all sorts, due to the credit crunch etc.,

Having now seen all the coverage and watched Fri's proghramme I can understand why it started later - they wouldn't have been ready to show off the new garden until last week!  It looks exciting though.

I watched Friday's one yesterday and was amazed to see how quickly the new place had been transformed in just a few weeks, especially when we saw how waterlogged it was at one time.

I watched it on Saturday morning and I think it looks very promising.  It did strike me though that they have to have a huge budget to spend in comparison to the average "Jo Public".  That custom-made greenhouse must have cost a small fortune!

I thought the programme seemed an improvement over the last couple of years, but it still doesn't seem very relevant to most people. Those who have a garden and budget to match what they're doing probably employ people to do the work for them. I'd like to see the kind of thing we could do at home.

Whether you think you can do a thing, or think you cannot, you are right.

I enjoyed it as I am a beginner but my mum found it a little bit basic.  I agree that they are splashing the cash but my understanding is that the hard landscaping is to create areas more akin to our smaller gardens with problem bits such as shady walled areas etc which they will then show us how to deal with.  I think they are aiming to make it more diverse and applicable to home gardeners but they have to construct it first.

However I would give my eye teeth for that greenhouse!  I am very much looking forward to fridays prog which is all on veg. Big Smile

It's never been the same since Geoff Hamilton died so I tend to watch it occasionally by accident rather than by special appointment. Still use some of Geoff's ideas.
