Can I grow outdoor cucumber (on a south facing wall) beside /very near courgette plants? I know it sounds daft, but I thought I might've read somewhere that courgettes (or maybe it was melons?) can fertilize female cucumber flowers, making the fruit bitter.

I'm trying to plan what I can plant next year, and wanted to check with you experts before buying any seeds!

Also, If anyone has recommendations for what climbing veg I could grow in large containers against a south-facing wall (I live in Scotland, but honest, it IS a lovely warm sun-trap!) I'd really appreciate it. So far, have thought of cucumber, climbing/trailing courgettes, hanging-basket-type cherry tomatoes, beans.... and that's it.

Never happen, but my ornamental gourds fertilised a courgette and I ate the fruit - delicous.  Next year seedling came up from abandoned fruits, ate rather bitter fruit - won't do that again. Ever.

Thank you both for your tips!

I've decided to go with courgettes, cucumber, beans, with cherry tomatoes in hanging baskets. I already have some strawberry plants elsewhere, otherwise I'd definitely be giving them a try in baskets!

And in the rubbish plastic grow house, chilli plants and aubergines.

you can also grow some nasturtiums as climbing plants which will provide you with peppery leaves and edible flowers - they will make very colourful additions to a salad.

It's easier to get rid of Herpes than Nasturtiums.

LOL! i get rid of my unwanted nasturtiums with a cunning mix of napalm blended with a little agent orange - works a treat. (wouldn't try rubbing it on a cold sore though). ;)
