Hello gq2882, You have come to the right place my friend, I wish you and your school children good look in your endeavour. Now to business, tomatoes can be grown okay in a gro bag although they do appreciate a deep root run, you can fix a bottomless pot over the gro bag and fill the pot with another gro bag contents, strawberries don't need much of a deep root run and will grow well enough in a window box type of container, potatoes like quite a deep run and if they are to be grown in containers a barrel would be ideal, there is a company out there who manufacture bags of compost that just require you to cut the top off and plonk the potatoes into them, Parsnips and carrots do require a deep root run to grow well, the deeper the better however there are stump rooted varieties of carrot that will do well enough in an eighteen inch deep container, parsnips are the devils work to germinate and the seed doesn't keep long at all, generally they do better in a deep container, could I ask if your school is affiliated to the RHS? it doesn't cost anything to affiliate and it brings many benefits too numerous to list here.
