This is the first year I have grown Alstroemeria, when the petals drop off, is it better to leave alone or cut off whats left. Hope the question is understood, first time poster.....Thanks.

    Hi, Joeli---

I have an Alstromeria and have never cut it just to remove spent flower heads.  It's not really necessary because they fall off beautifully.  I have pruned it only when branches were damaged or bent from heavy rains.  It has increased in stem numbers  and branches over the last 5 years.   They seem to require the same care as for Oriental lilies-those shed their petals, too, and increase the number of buds per plant over time.  You really need do nothing but make sure they get food and water.

Thanks for the reply, I'll leave well alone. It's one of the 'Princess' strain about 30cm high, lovely in the garden, would also look good as a patio plant......Thanks again.

I pull up spent stems - they detach at the base.  This is common practice with cut flower cultivars and seems to produce more flowers. As the sap can be irritating to some people, consider gloves.

    Hi Boggy

Do you mean from the base of the plant itself?
