I am a teacher - and yes you've guessed it... I'm on my holidays! Only time I get to do update my research, I've a garden club started at school last year with the help of a very hardworking and interested parent - I couldn't have done it without her input! We have managed to get to level 3 the risk assessment part and are ready to go onto the next level... I think. We started off really simply with just a couple of pots and gradually went from there - last June we lifted our first potato crops and the children were delighted with their their crop. My Primary 5 class raised some money to fund the August start by bringing in plants to sell and selling plant seed packets, we also ran a quizz and a wordsearch to help raise more funds to buy plants. As yet we don't really have a very good budget, but because I buy lots of plants from various companies through out the year they kindly donated some seeds for free.

Hi, just noticed this thread. Am not a teacher but work in the school office.
Dave, you must let us know how things went this year, and would love to see your pictures.
Clematis, you should also go to your local garden centre, they may be happy to help out with some freebies too. We took the nursery kids a visit to a local garden centre, and they gave them quite a few freebies
Probably like most schools we are collecting vouchers from the supermarket to exchange for garden tools etc. I have also taken in cuttings from my own garden and any extra plants I couldnt use. With tight budgets every bit helps as you know.

Hi all, I have just discovered this thread... I am a 3rd BSc Horticulture student (mature student) living in Ireland. I am doing a research project on Primary School children and their knowledge of plants and the fruits they produce. I would be very interested in your comments and observations with regard to the children's enjoyment of the gardens..... do they like to grow veg/fruit or plants etc.
Enjoyed reading your posts.
many thanks
Margaret

Hi margaret have just noticed this question - hopefully someone responded to you before now! The garden club was started 3 years ago and the pupils in the first class aren't part of the club now but are still interested - last year I had a sale of plants to raise some money for the club ( just extra plants I had in my garden) and the best seller by far were the strawberry runners! This year I have offered my old class extra seeds I had and the most popular were peas - not sweet peas but Mange tout etc. type - they also grew some marrows last year and of course all 3 classes have grown potatoes. Some children do like the flowers but more I think were in favour of the veg plants.
