Hi,
I have a long narrow roof terrace (5.5m x 2.5m) which overlooks and is overlooked by neighbouring properties. I would like to plant around the perimeter to create a natural screen to add privacy. there is a plain iron balcony rail on two of the edges, which could take some kind of creeping plants / flowers ( I quite like clamatis), and I would like freestanding plants on the other exposed edge. Aesthetically speaking I like bamboo but don't want the plants to grow any more than approximately 4ft high and with the narrow space don't want the plants / flowers to spread too much and encroach on the space. - any suggestions would be greatly appreciated as I am a complete novice as far as planting is concerned.
Many Thanks
Andrew

How about seedless grape vines Himrod and Vannessa sweet edible seedless grapes and the leaves to cook as stuffed vine leaves, and on the exposed side what about fanned fruit on a bamboo screen perimeter but have you cheked the weight bearing load of the roof garden? as you may have problems soiil and containers soon add up in weight without the extra weight of growing plants.

Bamboo, being awoodland plant, would not be my first choice for a roof terace, but what about grasses such as miscanthus - likes breezes, can be cut back readily and not fussy about conditions.
