The flowers of our courgette plants are being eaten off by something or other. The flowers get to a reasonable size and then we find them lying on the ground. We have tried using slug pellets and covering the plants with netting, but it is still happening. Today, I noticed that a small courgette has also been eaten of the stem. There is no sign of slime trails, insects or disease. HELP!!!!!

hello allotmentgirl, it is highly likely that the culprit who has eaten through the stem of your plant is a slug or snail but as for the flowers falling off, it could be due to cold/lack of pollination/not enough water (not likely) if the bees don't get around to pollinate your courgette flowers they will eventually fall off or if the plant is under stress ie.. too wet too dry or too cold the flowers will be ejected by the plant as a survival mechanism, try placing a cloche over them during really bad weather and at night and maybe put a few slug pellets out around the perimeter of the srea the plants are growing in. good luck my friend do let us know how you get on.

Hello Allotmentgirl. I've had one or two similar problems with my courgettes and wondered if it was rabbits, but this seems unlikely. My biggest problem this year is my courgettes taste really earthy. Haven't had this problem previous years and wonder if it is something to do with the bizarre weather we are currently experiencing. Also, I have always grown my plants in my veggie patch but this year due to a lack of space thanks to sweet potatoes, I am growing them in growbags for the first time - could this affect them? Is anyone having similar problems or perhaps have some suggestions.

My courgettes taste earthier than usual this, but in a good way. I have always found a handful of growmore makes all the difference to courgettes - they start to grow vigorously, flower all over the place and the fruits don't rot and drop off. Boggy
