50/50 so far!!
I'm only doing it for self satisfaction, my career won't rest on it I'm hoping things around the home are slowing a little, especially in the garden, and I will hit the books better. I keep promising myself time, still trying to figure if home learnig is a good thing or not.
Saying that I've had some great contact from here that has helped. How far in are you? I'm just Mod 3.

the way my life runs i tend to have a day or so off a week so once i have finished my script i will probably crack on with the next module. i have not studied for nearly 15 years so its tough getting back into it but rewarding all the same. im looking to hopefully start a new career within the horticulture sector. im going up to the RHS library next weekend. anyone been?

I'm toward the end of lesson 3, and am hoping that with the rubbish weather I'll crack on and get a good bit more done this weekend.
I'm only doing it for myself, too, not with a view to a career change or whatever, so less pressure but it's too easy to let it slip!
Never been to RHS library, you'll need to report back and make us all jealous.

Sooooo pleased to find this thread! I've just started too. My tutor has been excellent so far but it nice to find others getting ready for the same exam... I am hoping to change career - currently teaching - but I'm going to take it slowly. It's a bit daunting returning to study after so long

Looks like most of us are in the same boat then. Returning to learning (me 26 years!) and coping with trying to push ourselves!!!

Well folks...I've just worked out it's 24 years since i last studied and i am finding it really hard. I'm doing the level 2 course. It's not the understanding...it's the remembering it all that i have a problem with. I go over things again and again and again..and still forget them when i don't look at my work for a couple of days!
I go to college one day a week and everyone is lovely on the course and the course tutors are good and easy to understand. I did ask the tutor how people remember everything and he just said "it's early days yet".
Perhaps i'm putting too much pressure on myself, but i think if i revise as i go along, it won't be too bad at the end?
Is anyone else finding it hard to remember things? I make up little rhymes and allsorts in an effort to remember, but you can't have a rhyme for every fact and figure can you!

Yes, me for one! Learning to read and absorb not scan read!! Eek!
I've made some cards, like index cards, and break things down. One has the picture of the cell, others have the names of the parts of the cell and others have the function of the parts and I have to place then in the right places around the picture. Same with flower parts, stem parts, plant parts etc! Seems to help me a little anyway. I also try and name parts of the plant I'm putting in the garden, cutting back or just looking at too. Just trying to think of ways to keep it fresh. A bit like calling plants by their latin names rather than common I suppose, it sinks in eventually.

HI there,
Always good to find more people signing up and reassuring to know we are all anxious about studying again. Apart from a couple of computer courses it's 22 years since O levels for me.
Great to get tips from others about flash cards etc. Thanks. I'll try and add something helpful as soon as I can.
I have found the read, read and read again, although time consuming, does at least get some of the words into your head. I find the scientific words popping up whilst I'm washing up or something then it starts me trying to remember what they relate to or mean.
Anyway lets crack on. I'm sure we can do it. I've just had a newsletter from my tutor which says they had a 100 percent pass rate for the last lot of exams
Oh by the way I signed up with Extending Learning Opportunities. Did anyone else?

hi newbee,
i signed up with HCC. another tip that might help that i have done is to make up a glossary of important terms and put say 2 examples of plants which relate to this. for example,
term - tunicate
meaning - swollen leaves that totally enclose the bulb
examples - narcissus / tulip
this way when you are asked for examples in the exam you have some to hand.
all help and advice gratefully received!!

Hi tomrubhub
Thanks for the helpful hints. First time I've looked at the forum for a while. Been trying to get my head down and get on with it. How long would you say you spend on each section. Maybe one each time you sit down to study? It's difficult to know how long you've got. 2 yrs seems ages but i'm sure it will pass only too soon.
Hope it's looking christmassy where you are

Yes thanks for all the useful tips on here, they're really helpful!
The way I planned my own study time was to decide when I wanted to take the exam and then work back from that (my tutor suggested assigning the final six weeks for revision, completing past exam papers and sending them in for marking). That gave me six weeks per module (there are 12 in my course). I try to do about 2 hours study at a time, but have a break every 20 minutes or so, which was another useful tip from my tutor. Even if I only get up and have a walk around for a minute it seems to freshen my mind a bit
I'm trying to do two 2 hours a week (if you see what I mean) but I don't always manage it, life being what it is. I suppose if I find I'm not sticking to my 6 weeks per module I'll have to put a bit of a rush on.
We're snowed under here, very picturesque!

Hi, I started the RHS Level 2 course in November. When I first looked through the materials I was a bit apprehensive about the first section, although with further study and some study help from a friend I found things not as bad as I had thought. I think I will find further sections easier. I would like to hear how others studying are doing, any help appreciated.
