Rosemoor Garden RHS Garden Rosemoor

Set deep in the beautiful North Devon Countryside, RHS Garden Rosemoor was gifted to the RHS in 1988 by Lady Anne Berry, and since then the original eight acres have been greatly developed into 65 acres of enchanting garden and woodlands. In this blog, we will keep you updated with what's going on in the garden and what's looking good when, as well as letting you know about the exciting programme of events we are holding throughout the year. Enjoy!

Re-thatching in the Cottage Garden

Posted by Rosemoor Garden on 09 Jan 2009 at 02:04 PM

The centrepiece of Rosemoor’s Cottage Garden is, without doubt, the thatched shelter.

As well as being a favourite photographic location for many of our visitors, it is also the top choice for weddings at the garden. The shelter is built in the traditional Devon style - an oak frame in-filled with cob (wattle and daub) - and is topped with a thatched roof which, after 17 years, was in definite need of a facelift. A local craftsman has been busy this month re-thatching the roof using traditional wheat straw, and our visitors have been fascinated to watch a master thatcher carrying out his craft. He has been extremely helpful, giving ‘question and answer’ sessions when groups of visitors have congregated – definitely above and beyond the call of duty! I must say, it is looking very smart, so do come and have a look. Even better, if you’re thinking of ‘tying the knot’ in 2009 this could be the venue for you!
