The Girlguiding UK Centenary Garden at Hampton Court show

We've just finished day four of the build at Hampton Court Show. The route onto the site is always very calming with a ride through lovely parkland with deer grazing - a great chill out zone and time for deep breaths to connect with the soul before the reaching the site! The first week is always quite peaceful as not all the contractors and exhibitors start then, the second week bringing more people and so on.

Work is steaming ahead in the glorious sunshine on the Girlguiding UK Centenary garden. The boundary fence is in (although it needs another coat of paint: how annoying EEC regs mean they have to stamp a code on every piece of timber!); the posts for the sail shade are up (apparently, a whizz bit of equipment drilled the post holes like a knife cutting through butter) and the turf landform is marked out.

Tomorrow, Friday, the trees arrive and I'm art directing where they go, having already marked with a steel rod where I think they should be positioned (but women are allowed to change their minds, of course). After this, I'm heading to Crocus down the road in Surrey to look at plants and then onto Hampshire to look at more plants at Hardys. This will mean a nice drive back on Friday night via the M3, M25 and A1 during rush hour to Cambridgeshire. Sometimes the sheer glamour of being a garden designer completely overwhelms me ...
