World cup fever? Something for the girls at Hampton Court Palace Flower Show

Posted by Philippa Pearson on 09 Jun 2010 at 08:10 PM

Emerging from the depths of the comfortable cocoon that is the RHS Chelsea Flower Show in the aftermath of doing my first show garden there, the call of my next garden at Hampton Court Palace Flower Show awaited me with welcoming arms on my return home 12 days ago and has kept me pretty busy since. I have a confession to make: whilst I was aware over the past few months that there was something big going on with football, I hadn't realised it was actually starting to happen so soon. The countless free inserts and CDs about football players and team form with any sort of newspaper worth it's salt over the last week should have alerted to me that something big was happening. Just exactly how big this event is became obvious last week.

In the Girlguiding UK Centenary garden at Hampton Court Palace Flower Show next month we have film footage showing guides enjoying great guiding activities and these are shown on an outdoor TV (a special piece of equipment, very techie with waterproof this and that and a sunlight readable screen). After being very nice talking to a lot of people in companies that provide these TVs whilst my own sanity became perilously close to disintegrating as I realised that ALL the outdoor TVs in the country are now firmly ensconced in pubs throughout the land for the World Cup, I finally found probably the last one not destined for football fever. Phew!

The said TV will be mounted onto a rather nice piece of slate. The garden celebrates 100 years of guiding but we didn't want to concentrate too much on the heritage (very easy for a designer to get carried away on this) but look at what the organisation does now, what the future offers and how it suits today's modern girls. My piece of slate is a very old piece of natural material and it will be finished in a modern contemporary style so I feel, will compliment what we are seeking to achieve with the garden. Nick Fecitt, MD of Kirkstone up in the Lake District went out this morning to find us a nice big piece of slate that we could use to mount the very precious outdoor TV on. It will be cut, honed and crafted to make a rather gorgeous feature (I can already see how the plants will compliment this tactile material). Hand picked slate - how wonderful is that?!

Ladies and girls of all ages: if the thought of World Cup fever is too much to bear, book your tickets now for the Hampton Court Palace Flower Show and come and join us on the Girlguiding UK Centenary garden. It's definitely something for the girls!
