Four days left to finish garden off at Chelsea

Posted by Philippa Pearson on 19 May 2010 at 09:48 PM

Another 12 hour day comes to an end! We've just four whole days to finish off all the planting on The Victorian Aviary Garden at Chelsea and the pace quickens, as does the number of people and vehicles on site. With our garden sited against the Great Pavilion, storage area is at a premium and I felt somewhat stressed yesterday when our first batch of plants turned up from Hardy's Cottage Garden Plants and Kelways, wondering where to put them. Black Danish crates stood cheek by jowel over one half of a walkway into the Pavilion, and indeed, we grabbed space inside this awesome structure. More plants are turning up tomorow morning - and I have no idea where to store them! The hot weather today is a complete contrast to the frosts of last week and seering temperatures will bring the unfurling flower buds on well. With ferns waiting in the scorching sun to be planted in our garden, I nipped over to see James Wong this morning who very kindly cut a length of shading cloth to protect the somewhat startled ferns.

The peacock pebble mosaic by Maggy Howarth is attracting lots of attention already. It's hard to say what particular element is going to be the star of this garden - aviary, mosaic path, plants...?
