
I know this photo to you looks a bit of grass. Yes, OK, technically it is but to me it's a piece of the finest turf, destined for the world's most prestigious horticultural show where only the best will do. None of your worm-cast and weed infested turf for Chelsea, only the best dressed fescues are allowed to swish up and down Main Avenue.
I've got a lawned area in The Victorian Aviary Garden at Chelsea. Last year when I was exhibiting at Hampton Court Show, a well-known TV presenter told me that judges don't like gardens with lawn. Well, I do because lawns set off planting perfectly, define areas and if you maintain the grass properly and have nice clean clipped edges, it makes a jolly good feature all year round. Who said lawns were just a 'man thing'?!
Anyway, I've just driven down to Rowlan in St Albans in a howling wind and torrential rain to see this roll of their finest turf (apparently this product uses their 'most advanced cultivar technology') and brought this piece home to gaze upon from the study window. So I can watch it grow
