It's that time of year again. Time to start planning ahead for next year in the garden. Time to think about what edits to make, how to improve your patch, or give yourself the challenge of propagating something new, something we grow here in our own RHS Gardens. How? By applying for seed that our Wisley-based Seed Department has collected, cleaned, dried and packed in-house.

Apart from the actual harvesting, the seed has to go through a number of processes which include drying and cleaning before being packed and dispatched. This is just some of the behind-the-scenes work that goes into the process each year.

This is what the Seed Department have to say:
We collect, clean and pack hundreds of seed varieties, many of which are unusual or difficult to buy commercially. Staff and volunteers who work in the Seed Department are passionate about this fantastic service. We are keen to encourage Members to grow their own plants from seed collected in the RHS gardens.
Regular users will notice that the administrative charge has increased to £12 this year. We hope you will agree with us that this still represents good value for money at 60p per packet of seed (if the maximum of 20 packets are ordered).
We are already getting excited about next year as it will be our centenary year. The earliest seed catalogue we have is dated 1910-1911. We feel privileged to continue with this unique tradition of making seed available to RHS Members. We hope that you will help celebrate with us by supporting the Seed Scheme.
