Jim Gardiner Director of Horticulture RHS Garden Wisley

Jim Gardiner is the recently appointed Director of Horticulture for the Royal Horticultural Society and has previously been Curator and Chief Curator based at Wisley for over twenty years. Before that he was Curator at the Hillier Gardens and Arboretum. His primary interest is in woody plants, in particular Magnolias on which he has written two books, “Magnolias, their Care and Cultivation” and “Magnolias, A Gardener’s Guide”.

    It's damp at Wisley as I write, but I'm sure the sun will return.  To be honest, I'm out in China at the moment, at a Magnolia symposium.  It has brought all the world's experts together for a unique event, with field trips to Nankinsham in Guangdong Province, before more to Shixi and Lushan in Jiangxi Province. Although at low levels, I have seen many familiar plants including Cornus kousa var. chinensis, and also Bretschneidera, a plant that I haven't seen before.

  • Gardeners provide a Pick-up to Perk up Wisley Village

    On Thursday 23 April, a team of garden staff downed their spades and secatuers to clear litter from around Wisley Village and the surrounding garden boundaries. Many members of garden staff and students have homes in the village, but the area has been increasingly plagued by litter and fly-tipping from passing traffic.  So, in a change to normal duties, staff walked though Wisley Village and Mill Lane clearing litter from the verges and boundaries.  As well as the normal drinks bottles and paper, we found more unusual items including a bright blue bath and toilet seat chair!  
    The litter pick was organised by Garden Superintendent Tony Gregory, who also heads up the Green Team at RHS Garden Wisley. Tony said:


    ‘Staff had noticed the increasing amount of litter and wanted to do something proactive to help the environment. Many visitors drive through the village and we are really pleased with the results that this clean-up has achieved.’
     

    We have now sorted all the litter we found into recycling categories and we'll dispose of it appropriately.
