Wisley's new Rose Garden now under construction.

Posted by Jim Gardiner on 09 Mar 2009 at 09:40 AM

Last Monday, 2nd March, work started on our exciting new rose garden development.  Regular visitors will have noticed us clearing and preparing Weather Hill recently, and the information boards outlining our new garden.

The Bowes-Lyon Rose Garden, sponsored by Witan Investment Trust, is going to have new layout but will still keep a focus on roses. However, there will be much more companion planting with shrubs, herbaceous perennials and bulbs to provide more effective year-round interest.  It’s going to be really exciting watching it develop.

Robert Myers’ design takes advantage of the natural slope of the land here on Weather Hill and includes existing trees, with sweeping paths, retaining walls and new vistas.

We are carrying out this project over the next 3 years, beginning with the construction of the two main pathways.  And this is where Bernard, Rupert and Paul came in.  (They are at the bottom right hand corner of the plan).

Watch this space as the new garden takes shape.

Elsewhere, the crocuses are sparkling behind the Bowes-Lyon Pavilion at the top of Weather Hill, and on the Alpine Meadow.  Daffodils are on their way out and the a spring-like feel is really gripping the garden.  I hope you get the chance to come and experience it yourself.
