Scarecrows on Seven Acres

Posted by Jim Gardiner on 01 Jul 2008 at 11:50 AM

On Tuesday 24th June, Wisley was transformed into a midsummer wonderland by the WI with their scarecrow-inspired evening. The night was in honour of the 90th Anniversary of the Surrey Federation WIs and thousands of WI members from across the county came to celebrate.Click on www.thewi.org.uk/surrey or http://www.thewi.org.uk/standard.aspx?id=11462 for more information.

The ladies of the WI had been challenged to craft their own scarecrows and a whole range of wacky and wonderful creations were unveiled across the Gardens – 124 in total. A wealth of imagination and creativity depicted, amongst others, Canadian Mounties, Suffragettes as well as the WI ladies themselves and the slightly more outlandish “Cat in the Hat” scarecrow and even Santa Claus was given a scarecrow-makeover!

The huge evening of entertainment didn’t stop there, with the two thousand strong crowd being entertained by stilt walkers and aerial acrobats around the Glasshouse which made for a dazzling spectacle.

We all had a wonderful evening, and you can come along to see the scarecrows around Seven Acres in the Garden until Monday 7th July.  It’s worth a trip, but beware – some of them really are a bit scary!

The head scarecrow is Sid.  He created his own website showing some of the 127 scarecrows that turned up.  Try: scarecrows-reunited.tripod.com

Thanks Sid.  What a marvellous set of friends you have.  A great shame your stay with us was so brief.
